THE GIFT OF GOODWILL
The Gift of Goodwill
2024, Local/Street
Charlotte, NC, USA
The Gift of Goodwill is a processing of the trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns. Inspired by the Waterford crystal covered Times Square New Years Eve Ball, this piece renders the ubiquitous red and white coronavirus with glowing crystalline lenses covered in emoji based iconography inspired by the symbols of lockdown. Designed as a wearable helmet, the piece is displayed with an actual hazmat suit adorned with “PARTY” - capturing the conflict between attempts to protect our communities and the selfishness exhibited by so many.
The Gift of Goodwill was first shown at Local Street ‘23 show at the Mint Museum in Uptown Charlotte in November of 2023. The spherical component is approximately 23 inches in diameter and was constructed from a 3D Printed black frame, covered with 720 clear resin crystals over custom designed PCBs with addressable RGB LEDs.

The addressable LEDs allow colorful patterns that disguise the malicious nature of the virus.
The Gift of Goodwill was designed as a wearable piece. A single cycloptic red arcade button asks viewers to risk proximity to the piece in order to interact with it.
