CHROMATIC ROOTS
Chromatic Roots
2025, Privately Funded
Charlotte, NC, USA
Two artists got locked in an abandoned church basement. As they explored, they were inspired to activate an underutilized space to the benefit of their community.
Partnering with Arts Plus in their Plaza Midwood campus, we recruited over 30 local artists and five musicians who spent over six months working together to create Chromatic Roots: a collaborative immersive art experience that followed a missing janitor as he discovered the new life that can grow as we cut away the stranglehold of apathy and stagnation.
A six member creative leadership team mentored 24 artists to transform 2,500 square feet of basement into diverse biomes - a subterranean forest, kinetic ocean, cool disco ice palace, meditative desert, and top secret security office.
Chromatic Roots opened on August 1, 2025, and ran for three months, closing on November 1st. It was completely self funded and produced with the goal of creating and supporting a community of local artists. With limited resources for promotion, we relied on word of mouth and social media to gain traction. Across a three month run, we hosted six musical performances, five community events, two yoga classes, one improv class, and welcomed over 2,000 guests from all corners of the Carolinas and as far away as California.
